There have been days when I asked myself why all this cycling advocacy and getting involved mattered so much. Why did it matter to me personally if cyclists had a safe passing bill? There were days when it seemed that we could not motivate one person to call their representative, when no one wanted to send emails or letters or faxes. Sometimes it felt like a lot of fellow cyclists shrugged their shoulders. We kept sending emails, we kept calling our friends, begging and sometimes pleading and nagging them to please make that call. Many did. We worked hard to fill that bus to Austin - and those of us who went walked miles that day. It was a life changing experience in many ways. Today SB 248 passed. Today we have that 3 feet. . Some years ago a young girl was struck by a car and killed while riding her bicycle to school here in the metroplex. A young girl who was the brightest star in her daddy's sky. I don't know if the safe passing law would have helped her or not but I told her mother today that SB 248 had passed. We both cried. Yeah...it matters. It may be too late for one child, but it won't be too late for others. Because not all of us are some people's idea of a stereotypical cyclist. Some of us really are just kids who ride bikes to school, guys who have no other means of getting to work to support a family, and folks who just like to ride for fun. J - This is for you - and your daddy. People like you are why it matters. |

Great Sb248 out of the senate and the house will hopefully go fast as well on HB1790. Now if we can educated ignorant self important folks who believe cyclist do not belong on the roads. Mr. Brimmers amendment had to be one of the most ignorant, self important things I have seen done publicly in a long time. The Senator from Ft. Worth obviously cares more about himself than his constituents. It was obvious he cares more about how fast he can get to his destination, rather than the benefits of sharing the road with health conscience, fuel saving, bicyclist, and how this bill can help ensure his and their safety and well being. Let's hope SB248 can help us educate the ignorant people who do not believe in bicycling, safety, and doing the right thing.

Yesterday was special to me as well. Being one of the people who went to Austin and stumped for this makes this very personal. Watching the process happen is very gratifying now.
Also it is special because all the friends I have lost needed this long ago. For all the people I will never get to ride with again, never see enjoy their passion or see them hug their loved ones, WE DID IT!
