Reader Responds to Sen. Brimer

This Letter to the Editor appeared in some editions of The Dallas Morning News Wednesday:

Re: "Bike bill headed for showdown," Thursday (5/10) news story.

I find the comment by Sen. Kim Brimer, R-Fort Worth, that bicyclists don’t belong on country roads interesting, considering that this past weekend about 3,000 cyclists completed the MS-150, ending in Fort Worth.

Most of the roads they traveled were two-lane country roads with no shoulder. Is Mr. Brimer saying that he is going to build shoulders on all country roads so that cyclists can get to Fort Worth? Or is he saying that cyclists should ride in the cities?

I think Sen. Brimer needs to rethink his comments and change his attitude towards cyclists. Ask the 200 or so people who were in Sundance Square cheering all of the cyclists at the finish line of the MS-150. The cyclists brought their families and friends, who brought their wallets along and opened them up to spend their money in downtown Fort Worth. I’m sure the merchants didn’t mind that we rode on two-lane country roads to get there.

J.R. I couldn't agree more, Mr. Brimmer needs a dose of reality. Bicycles are everywhere and just because a road doesn't have a shoulder shouldn't prevent them from using it.
It is every one's responsibility to use the roads safely, the cyclist, pedestrians, as well as cars and trucks. If that means slowing down and being cautious, then it should be that simple. Not having the right to blow past a cyclist as close as possible just to make it to their destination, shoulder or no shoulder.
I commute several days a week, and do much of my shopping in my bicycle, if Mr. Brimmer had his way I would be forced to drive, and that wast gas, pollutes the environment, and does nothing for my health.

Cheers to JR Kenworthy for taking Fort Worth State Sen. Kim Brimer to task over comments that cyclists don't belong on country roads.
Mr. Senator, I dare say drunks don't belong on the highways or secondary roads, especially drunks with previous convictions who get a second, third and then-some chance to get back behind the wheel. Fix THAT Senator Brimer, then worry about two wheelers out for a ride getting more exercise than liftting glasses at lobbyist parties in Austin.
