The Hotter’N Hell Hundred is revamping its starting procedures in an effort to get the Wichita Falls rally off to a smoother start on Aug. 25. Rally organizers are trying to better separate riders in the marshaling area on Scott Street by distance and anticipated pace. Fast century riders will start first, followed by the slower groups of 100-milers, followed by the 100-K cyclists, etc. A pickup truck with a 16- to 18-foot trailer will be used to group and hold riders with a similar ability. The idea is to give each and every rider the easiest and fastest start, said H”NH H executive director Roby Christie. Mr. Christie said he and his staff are trying to offer a helping, not a heavy hand in grouping the start. “Our philosophy was that the morons, jerks and idiots are going to do what they are going to do, whether we’re there or not, so we’re going to try and not worry about them, because it’s our belief that most people will want to follow instructions to get to where they are supposed to line up. “What we don’t want to do is get a bunch of military police down there and force people into corrals.” Many rallies, including the H'NHH, have had designated starting positions, but the cyclists tend to bunch together by the starting time. “The mob kind of compresses forward,” Mr. Christie said. “And pretty soon, the separation between slow, medium and fast 100 milers is gone and the delineation between 100-K’s and 100-miler’s is gone and progressively on down the way. “We’re hoping by having those trucks and trailers across, each starting line will be less likely to be compressed … and they will be able to get off to a faster start.
“We have a clear shot to Iowa Park with no encumbrances in front of the start,” Mr. Christie said. “Based on the E-mails that we’ve received, folks just want to have a clear shot at the starting line. They don’t want to fall they don’t want to have any accidents. The start is a little scary because there are so many bicycles in one place.” |

The idea of some form a segregation at the start of the Hotter n'Hell is a great one. As one who plans to ride once again this year, I like the idea of barriers between those who want to charge out of the starting area and those who are out for a more leisurely ride, whether the full 100 miles or shorter.
Small children and slow riders in general shouldn't have to be in fear of the life from those, like me, who want to go faster and enjoy riding in a quick moving peleton. The one other time I rode in the Hn'H proved to me that it is one of the best organized mass rides in the nation. Let's hope this plan works as well as intended.
